I am a native Californian, originally from San Diego. My parents were archeologists, and I was fortunate, as a child, to be able to travel to many interesting places while accompanying them on their “digs“. I spent a lot of time in the field and in museums, studying and admiring bird skins and egg collections. I’ve had an avid interest in birding and ornithology since I was about 10 yrs old.
Many years ago, I fell in love with birding at the Salton Sea and I still bird there regularly. After spending so much time there during the 90’s, I finally rented a place at Red Hill and actually planted all the cottonwood trees in order to provide better birding habitat. I’ve lived in many parts of southern California, but I finally chose to make my home in Santa Barbara County in 2000, because of the wide variety of habitat and birding opportunities this area offers.
I’ve worked on many environmental protection projects by CA Fish & Game, BLM and other environmental groups, for federally-protected threatened and endangered species. I spent five years researching for the San Bernardino and Riverside Counties’ Breeding Bird Surveys, and also worked on Important Bird Areas of California (IBAC). I’ve also done bird surveys with China Lake NWC (CA), Edwards AFB (CA), Ft. Irwin NTC (CA) and a few other military installations. I’ve worked with Vandenberg Air Force Base (CA) on conservation projects. Since 2000, when we realized that Riverside, San Bernardino and Imperial Counties should have their own list-serve, I have been a co-moderator of the Yahoo Group’s “inlandcountybirds“. In previous years, I’ve served as both conservation chairman and as vice-president of La Purisima Audubon. During the 2006 ABA Conference in Ventura, CA, I was Field Trip Coordinator. Over the years, I’ve led many fieldtrips for various Audubon groups, the Nature Conservancy, the American Birding Association, Western Field Ornithologists, and a few bird festivals. I also co-lead many deepwater pelagic trips covering the California Bight, from San Luis Obispo to San Diego Counties, and even into waters off of Baja.
I hope to see you in California, and let’s go birding.
